Review: This is a stand-alone novel by McCall Smith, set in a small village in England prior to, during, and after WWII. A young wife is deserted by her wealthy husband to pursue love in France. Her in-laws feel so badly for her that they allow her to live in their country cottage. When the war starts, she helps the war effort by working on a local farm. While there she starts an orchestra of local people and soldiers at the local post. I enjoyed the intimate look at what the war was like for British civilians.
