You are what you read

How much can you tell about people from the books they say influenced them most? According to the folks at Scholastic Publishing, quite a lot. Their newly launched site, You Are What You Read, was featured recently on ABC's Good Morning America (original video available here), and encourages users to to share their unique personal "bookprints" while checking out the bookprints of such celebrities as Taylor Swift, Bill Gates, and Daniel Radcliffe.

  1. I took a look at that site, and found it rather interesting. I only wish we could see why people chose some of their books.

  2. @Joe: Well, I can see why Daniel Radcliffe (the actor who plays Harry Potter) would have included "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" as one of his five most influential books. But I do wonder why Taylor Swift included "Big Bird's Day on the Farm"...

  3. It's interesting (but not surprising) how many people on the "You are what you read" site named children books. One children's book that definitely influenced my life is A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin, because it was the first book that really introduced the idea of magical balance to me. Before that, all the books about magic I had read made it seem like an all-powerful solution to any problem, but A Wizard of Earthsea is about an ambitious young wizard who accidentally unleashes an evil being and then has to deal with the consequences.
