Sally Gardner wins the 2013 Carnegie Medal

Sally Gardner has been awarded the Carnegie Medal for her book, Maggot Moon, a dystopian tale that also won this year’s Costa Children’s Book Award. The heroine of Gardner's book is, like the author, dyslexic and in the tale stands up to a sinister dictatorship while friends and family around him ‘disappear’.  With one hundred very short chapters, told in an utterly original first-person voice, Gardner propels readers through a narrative that is by turns gripping and darkly humorous, bleak and chilling, tender and transporting.
