Teen book-into-movie alerts

Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games - many of this decade's most popular movies were first published as books for young readers.  Here are four more teen books being turned into feature films:
  • The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater - Nineteen-year-old returning champion Sean Kendrick competes against Puck Connolly, the first girl ever to ride in the annual Scorpio Races, both trying to keep hold of their dangerous water horses long enough to make it to the finish line.
  • Earthseed by Pamela Sargent - Before Zoheret and her companions can populate a new planet, they must learn to conquer those same instincts that almost destroyed their ancestors on Earth over one hundred years ago.
  • Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs - After a family tragedy, Jacob feels compelled to explore an abandoned orphanage on an island off the coast of Wales, discovering disturbing facts about the children who were kept there.  Illustrated with haunting vintage photography, this book will delight anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.
  • City of Bones by Cassandra Clare - The first in the 4-book "Mortal Instruments" series.  Suddenly able to see demons and the Darkhunters who are dedicated to returning them to their own dimension, fifteen-year-old Clary Fray is drawn into this bizzare world when her mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a monster.

Books like 'Clockwork Prince'

Adults and teens alike enjoy the work of Cassandra Clare, whose second book in the "Infernal Device"s series, Clockwork Prince, has just recently been published.  The Community Library owns three copies; unsurprisingly, all three of them are checked out.  Whether you've read it already or are still waiting for your copy, try these similar reads, recommended by the readers' advisory database NoveList.
  1. The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa - These sometimes (some might say "deliciously") melodramatic fantasy romances both have steampunk elements in the mix, and characters in each one are involved in a tense love triangle. This is book 3 in the 'Iron Fey' series, so start with The Iron King.
  2. The Faerie Ring by Kiki Hamilton - Both of these romantic historical fantasy novels present a version of Victorian London in danger of being overrun by the supernatural, with heroines ill-prepared but determined to save the day.
  3. Nightshade by Andrea Cremer - Teens looking for fantasy novels with intricate plotting, steadily increasing tension, steamy love triangles, and plenty of twists and turns will be satisfied by either of these compelling reads.
And of course, if you're new to the series, start with Infernal Devices, book 1: Clockwork Angel, or the first book from another series in the same universe: Mortal Instruments, book 1: City of Bones.
