Dangerous Women

Dangerous Women edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois
The cross-genre anthology Dangerous Women edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois is a collection of twenty-one short stories celebrating dangerous women, both heroines and villains, and includes a  new “Outlander” story by Diana Gabaldon, a tale of Harry Dresden’s world by Jim Butcher, a story from Lev Grossman set in the world of "The Magicians," and a novella by George R. R. Martin about the "Dance of the Dragons," the vast civil war that tore Westeros apart nearly two centuries before the events of "A Game of Thrones."

Also included are original stories of heroines and villains alike by Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, Sherilynn Kenyon, Lawrence Block, Carrie Vaughn, S. M. Stirling, Sharon Kay Penman, and many others.

"This meaty collection delivers something for nearly every reader's taste as it explores the heights that brave women can reach and the depths that depraved ones can plumb." (Publishers Weekly Reviews)

New TV Series: The Magicians

Did you enjoy Lev Grossman's The Magicians or is recently-released sequel, The Magician King?  You're not alone; in fact, the books have achieved such popularity that Fox has bought the rights and plans to produce a television series.  Deadline reports that the writers of the forthcoming show will be none other than the ones who penned the blockbuster movie X-Men: First Class. In the story, Quentin Coldwater graduates from a secret, exclusive college of magic in upstate New York and finds that a fictional land from a series of childhood fantasy novels is real, but is more darker and dangerous than he could have imagined.  If you haven't yet treated yourself to this humorous portal fantasy described as "at once psychologically piercing and magnificently absorbing," then reserve The Magicians today!

Sequel Alert: The Magician King

If you loved Lev Grossman's 2009 novel The Magicians, you probably can't wait to get your hands on the sequel, The Magician King, which is coming out tomorrow (August 9, 2011). Both books pay homage to beloved fantasy series from the past like The Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings while employing a tongue-in-cheek Monty Python or Douglas Adams brand of humor. In this newly released sequel, Quentin Coldwater returns to Fillory together with compatriots from Brakebills College of Magical Pedagogy: a daring quest filled with plenty of swordplay keeps the plot engaging while humor and fully realized characters raise interesting questions on the nature of heroism. Happy reading!
