Inspirational Horse Stories
Inspired in part by the success of the film adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's War Horse, both fictional and nonfictional horse stories have also experienced a resurgence in interest. One brand-new addition to the genre is The Eighty-Dollar Champion: Snowman, The Horse That Inspired a Nation. Similar nonfiction reads recommended by Novelist include Seabiscuit: An American Legend (also a movie) and The Horse God Built: The Untold Story of Secretariat. For horsey fiction, try Riding Lessons and its sequel Flying Changes by the bestselling author of Water for Elephants (also a movie). Happy reading, neigh-bors!
Water for Elephants Read-alikes

This popular novel by Sara Gruen (which was recently turned into an equally successful movie available at your library) tells the story of two circus performers during the Great Depression. If you're looking for something similar in style to read, try any of the following books from this librarian-compiled list: The Help, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, The Thirteenth Tale, A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Kite Runner, and The Dry Grass of August. Rising Star: Debut Novel Night Circus
A newly published book that's fast becoming a bestseller is Night Circus by debut novelist Erin Morgenstern. Waging a fierce competition for which they have trained since childhood, circus magicians Celia and Marco unexpectedly fall in love with each other and share a fantastical romance that manifests in fateful ways. A good next read for fans of Water for Elephants; those who enjoy a taste of magical romance with their circus stories might also enjoy Tiger's Curse.
